With support from Legatum, FHRI opened up a Legal Aid Project in Bushenyi District on 20th October 2022. The project was developed under the theme ‘Enhancing Criminal Justice Reform in Uganda: Promoting Alternative Punishment in Bushenyi District’.
The project also expands its services to the districts of greater Bushenyi namely: Mitooma, Rubilizi, Sheema and Buhweju. The intervention of FHRI – Bushenyi Legal Aid Project (FHRI-B LAP) ensures the respect for the rights of suspects during pretrial detention, addressing overcrowding in prisons and addressing the dignity/ integrity of the offenders.
Main Objective:
Reducing Pre-Trial Detention and Decongestion in Prisons
Activities:
- Provision of free holistic legal aid services to the poor and vulnerable suspects and inmates.
- Routine monitoring of the rights of suspects and inmates.
- Civic awareness
- Advocacy for legal, policy and practice change within the Criminal Justice system.
