The 24th World Day Against the Death Penalty

Every year on 10th October, the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) joins the global community in commemorating the World Day Against the Death Penalty.

This year’s theme, “Stories for Life,” focuses on humanizing those affected by the death penalty by bringing to light the stories of individuals whose voices are often neglected, unheard, or silenced.

Recognizing the humanity of persons sentenced to death does not diminish the suffering of victims, their families, or the harm caused to society. Rather, it acknowledges that the death penalty has far-reaching consequences that affect many people, including victims’ families, lawyers, judges, prison staff, abolitionists, and entire communities. Each of these individuals has a story worth telling.

The 24th World Day Against the Death Penalty will be commemorated on 12th October 2026 at the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) offices in Nsambya, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

During the commemoration, FHRI will share its story alongside those of other stakeholders, including children whose parents have been sentenced to death, members of academia, the judiciary, the Uganda Prisons Service, civil society organizations, former death row inmates, and friends of the campaign for the abolition of the death penalty.

Join us as we reflect on these powerful stories, promote dialogue, and reaffirm our commitment to the protection of human dignity and the abolition of the death penalty.
