Established in 1991, the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) is an independent, non-governmental, non-partisan and not-for-profit human rights advocacy organisation.
- To promote respect for human rights and civic values.
- To empower citizens with human-rights knowledge and skills to demand and defend their rights.
- To advocate for a human-rights-friendly policy and legislative framework that can foster respect for human dignity.
The foundation is currently implementing its 9th Strategic Plan 2022-2026 titled ‘Building Back Better: Realizing Human Rights in the Post COVID-19 Era” (2022 – 2026).’ Within this context, FHRI implements its strategic priorities in the programme through the following units:

We have a periodic electronic newsletter: FHRI E-newsletter. It contains useful information about past and upcoming events, FHRI’s involvement in its partners’ work, organisational achievements, and challenges. The news link, social media, press releases, and reports are also used as platforms to communicate information about FHRI and its work. Hard copies of the reports can be accessed from FHRI offices. We categorize membership in two categories: Individual and Corporate Membership.
A. Individual Membership: We classify this into two groups;
- Life Member
These are members, eligible for election, whose subscription adds up to Ug. Shs. 300,000/= or US $ 150.
- Ordinary Member
These are members, eligible for election, whose subscription is any amount ranging from Ug. Shs. 50,000/= to 299,000 or between US $ 25 and US $ 149.
B. Corporate Membership:
- Associate members, companies or organizations ineligible for election, pay a minimum of Ug. Shs. 1,000,000 or US $ 300 payable at once
Payment can be both by cheque or cash. Cheques should be written in the names of Foundation for Human Rights Initiative. Cash or cheque payments must be paid at the FHRI Secretariat and a receipt obtained or deposited on the organization’s account at:

Objective: To build the capacity of citizens to proactively defend their rights and demand accountability from the state through rights knowledge.
- Defence the Right to Personal Liberty
Objective: Monitoring and exposure of human rights violations as well as influence policy, practice and legal reforms respectively.
- The Rights and Rule of Law
Objective: Aims at strengthening the capacity and independence of the judiciary in order to reach just decisions.
- The Campaign for the Abolition of the Death Penalty in Uganda.
Objective: To advocate for the progressive abolition of the death penalty.
- The Access to Justice Campaign
Objective: To provide free and accessible legal assistance to poor and vulnerable groups.

- All registered members are eligible to attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
- All registered members receive updates on the activities of the organization and are part of a national information network for the organization.
- All registered members may be invited to FHRI’s conferences and training workshops.
- Only Life Members are eligible to stand and be elected during the General Assembly, which takes place every three years, to serve on the Board of Directors.
