Human Rights Awareness Session for FHRI Interns- 2026

Published on: April 23, 2026

Every year, the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) admits a number of students for internship, offering practical training across a range of disciplines including law, social work and social administration, and accounting. These interns are drawn from tertiary institutions and universities at diploma, bachelors, and masters levels.

For the 2026 intake, applications were received from several local academic institutions, including Uganda Christian University, Victoria University, Kampala International University, the Law Development Centre, and Makerere University, among others.

During the first quarter, six interns were admitted to the programme. Throughout their placement, the interns were assigned to respective units aligned with their academic background and areas of interest. They undertook a variety of tasks such as attending to clients at police stations, drafting legal documents, participating in community mobilisation for human rights awareness, following up on cases, engaging in advocacy initiatives, filing cases, and supporting basic accounting functions.

These activities enabled the interns to translate theoretical knowledge into practical application while exposing them to a dynamic and complex work environment. As a result, they developed key professional competencies, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

In addition, the interns were given an opportunity to organise and participate in a Human Rights Awareness Training Programme. They actively contributed by identifying topics of interest and selecting resource persons from both within FHRI and external networks, with guidance from management.

On 10th April 2026, the interns commenced their first Human Rights Awareness Training at the FHRI offices. The training covered a range of topics, including:
• Human rights associations in institutions of higher learning
• Effective client-lawyer relationships
• Mediation techniques
• Resource mobilisation
• Human rights concepts in Uganda and at the international level

The training was facilitated by distinguished experts, including Mr. Elly Kasirye, Chairperson of the Wakiso District Human Rights Committee; Dr. Livingstone Sewanyana, FHRI Executive Director; Ms. Sheila Muwanga, FHRI Deputy Executive Director – Programmes; and members of the FHRI Legal Services Unit led by Ms. Solome Nagadya, Head of the Legal Aid Unit.
The two-day training concluded with the awarding of certificates of attendance to the interns by Dr. Sewanyana.
